Three of the big lessons that I have experienced in my life have been working with an autistic child for a senior project, school in general, and by hanging out with my friends. Working with my autistic student was an eye opening experience for me because I didn’t know how to react to certain behaviors or how to talk to him. Shortly after I started working with him in the class, I realized I really didn’t have to treat him any differently. He learns just like everyone else it just doesn’t always click right away or he needs an explanation for why something is the way it is. He taught me about life, and how you should be happy for who you are and what you have. School has been a big lesson for me just because I have learned time management as well as social skills and much more. It has been a beneficial lesson to have, and everyone has it at some point in his or her lives. Making friends as well as hanging out with them is a lesson itself. It teaches about trust as well how to interact and deal with problems as well as situations.
I want to be a teacher because I have always loved working with younger kids. I have experience in a classroom because of working with an autistic child in the Bow Elementary School. Also for my job I have in the summer, I work at a summer camp with children ranging from five all the way up to eleven. I know how to have fun and learn at the same time. I have been told that I should be a teacher because I know how to interact and get down to a child’s level. I have a lot of patients and don’t get frustrated easily. Also it’s about having a job you love instead of dreading coming into work every day.
I feel, as though there will be many rewards to becoming a teacher. The most rewarding thing about being a teacher I feel is watching the children grow and learn throughout the year. They look up to you for everything and are always smiling. Knowing that you are changing a life by helping our future to be educated is a big deal. The things they are taught in school are shown as they grow up and start working. I do feel that there are challenges as well. Some of the challenges are staying calm when the students may be screaming or misbehaving. Also adapting your teaching around how the children learn and the material they are expected to learn.

I think you brought up a good point when you said that remaining calm while there is chaos is going to be challenging, but having that skill is very rewarding. I think its great that you have had an experience, like working with an autistic child, to help you realize what you want to do.
Because of your experience in teaching, time management, and ability to trust people, I think you will make a great teacher! It is definitely going to be a rewarding and fun job. I think that your experience working with an autistic child is a very awesome one and that it will help you later in the classroom.
Nichole, I enjoyed reading your blog and hearing what you feel have been your big lessons in life. You bring an open mind and attitude about children all being unique to this field which is a great foundation to grow on. I look forward to working with you this fall. Jo
